Best in Show cup and Large Gold at the Suffolk Show!

31/5/2023

It's a golden time at Katie's Garden!

Following our involvement with the gold medal winning Talitha Arts Garden at last week's Chelsea Flower Show we have rounded off the month with Large Gold at the Suffolk Show today, the highest award possible!

Even better, we were also awarded the Silver Cup for best display in the flower show.

The display garden in the Glasswells Flowers & Garden tent is a showcase for our ranges of garden plants, including patio and basket plants, perennials, shrubs, ferns, grasses, alpines, herbs and edibles.

A pergola laden with hanging baskets sits over four themed cubes – including shady plants, drought-tolerant plants, wildflower-esque flowers, and bright & bold – surrounded by an array of pots and planters and a wooden cart packed with grow-your-own vegetable and salad plants.

If you need inspiration for planting to different themes, head to our Advice section - click here!

Our Suffolk Show display is done!

30/5/2023

Catherine, Susie and Rick spent the day at the Trinity Park Showground putting together Katie's Garden's entry in the Glasswells Flower & Garden Show. As ever it is a floral delight!

Suffolk Show preparations

They might spend several weeks setting up at Chelsea, but we can do the Suffolk Show in less than two days! A few snapshots from day one are below - click on the images to enlarge.

We'll be at the Flower & Garden Show section this Wednesday and Thursday.

Gold at the Chelsea Flower Show!

23/5/2023

Congratulations to Joe and Laura Carey for their Gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for their design The Talitha Arts Garden, featuring plants from Katie’s Garden!

Not only that, the garden was also awarded best in category too!

A great result for a debut entry.

We like to think it also reflects well on the plant husbandry skills of the Katie’s Garden team, in particular Jeanette and Susie who took on most of the responsibility for nurturing the plants at Newbourne over the year.

Tune in to tonight’s ITV Anglia News to see if we make the edit for their Chelsea round-up.

If you are heading to the show make sure you visit the garden in the All About Plants section of the Great Pavilion, and look out for Jeanette, Anna, Gill and Catherine, who will be working as garden greeters on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bumblebee Banquet garden sell-off for Suffolk Wildlife Trust!

12/5/2023

Picture

Enjoyed visiting our Bumblebee Banquet garden? You can now take a part of it home with you as part of our special sell-off this weekend, in aid of Suffolk Wildlife Trust Woodbridge Group!

We said a fond farewell to our pollinator-friendly spring flower bed earlier this week. All the plants got lifted out and are now ready to go to new homes – either straight into your flower beds, or to be properly potted up.

If you need a reminder on which plants were used, visit our Garden Area page here to see the planting list: click here.

In its place is our new Drought Garden, again designed by our own Catherine McMillan, author of Gardening for the Uncommitted. Stay tuned for more details!

A visit from BBC Gardeners' World!

3/5/2023

We’ve had to keep it under our hats for a while, but we are now allowed to reveal we had some special visitors to the nursery immediately after the busy Easter weekend, in the form of a television crew from BBC Gardeners’ World!

Tune in to see the results this Friday, 9pm on BBC Two.

Picture
The team from the BBC spent the day filming the plants we are growing for the Talitha Arts Garden, which will feature at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

The garden’s designers, Joe and Laura Carey of Carey Garden Design Studio in Norfolk are first-time entrants, and the piece will be focusing on their experience of taking part in ‘the greatest flower show in the world’.

The crew also found the time to interview Katie’s Garden’s owner, Susie Davis, about the new alternatives to peat-based compost, as we continue to reduce our own use of peat on the nursery.

Picture
Among the plants the Careys were interviewed about were the ornamental grass Melica uniflora; perennial Peucedanum rablense, which bears a resemblance to cow parsley; Aquilegia buergeriana, an unusual Columbine; and Geums 'Bremners Nectarin' and 'Bell Bank'.

We hope you will appreciate that we do not currently have any of the featured plants available to sell, as every last one is ringfenced for the Chelsea garden, ‘Just in case’!

Picture
The one exception is Geum Bell Bank, which is in the company of many of its family in our new special Geums display! Come and choose from over a dozen varieties of this hardy garden perennial.

You might be familiar with the Geums native to this country, with common names of wood avens and water avens, and the heritage shows in some of the cultivars we have to sell. Geums really came into fashion following the introduction of ‘Totally Tangerine’ in 2010, leading to lots of new varieties in the years since!

Best in sun, with a soil that doesn’t dry out too much, taller varieties are good minglers in the borders, and all have lengthy flowering periods.

As well as growing them for Chelsea, we are also trialling several varieties in our own display garden and in the Flourish range.
