We have good numbers of Phlox paniculatas - the more common upright type - including fresh batches of white 'David' and pale lilac 'Franz Schubert' in 2 litre pots at £5.99, as well as several other varieties in coral, strong pink and pale pink.
Maybe less well known are the carpeting Phlox, great for sunny ground cover, of which we have several varieties. And somewhere in between is the spreading Phlox Chatahooche. Good for fronts of borders, pots, rockeries and anywhere they can spill. Just coming into first flower now, in gorgeous tones of warm blue. In 2 litre pots priced £5.99.

Lots of our 1 litre perennials are getting big enough for selling.
First to flower is a name you might not know: the Doronicum Leonardo. Cheery yellow flowers for spring and summer. £3.29 each. We have huge numbers of alpines just about ready too. Most are in 9cm and 1 litre pots, but we can't resist giving a mention to these Rhodanthemum hosmariense - now reclassified as dwarf Leucanthemum - in 1.5 litre pots for £4.50 each. Just about ready now - a huge choice of perennial Dianthus plants, with beautiful silvery foliage that lasts year-round.

Whatever you know them as, we hope you have room in your garden for one or more, because this year's crop is probably our best ever.
Pink 'Dicentra spectabilis' is happy in shade or sun, while the white version actually prefers shade. Their buds are just opening out into flowers now. They will make a good show until late May, when they will die back, making them great for pairing with late-flowering perennials such as Penstemons, Fuchsias and Dahlias. Next spring expect them to pop back up covering twice the space. In 2 and 3 litre pots - £5.99 each Classifying Salvia is a complicated business as there are so many different types, but growing them isn't.
Sun or light shade, most soils as long as they are not too wet, bee-friendly and scented leaves. Once they finish flowering, cut the whole plant down to a couple of inches and you should be rewarded with a second flush of blooms (care is different for woody-stemmed varieties in yesterday's post - eg Hot Lips). Those pictured are all in 2 or 3 litre pots at £5.99. Click on images to enlarge. Other Salvias available in other pot sizes - details to come! Cottage garden classics. Most effective when planted in clumps of three plants or more. Take a look at the Cottage Garden Plant Pack for suggestions of plants to grow them with. Best in full sun and well-drained soil.

We have hundreds of fresh young Salvias for April, thanks to our propagation department (hello, Tabitha). Plant them now and they should be well established for flowering time, which runs from late May to late October or even longer. Sun lovers (they don't mind part-shade), bee-friendly, scented leaves and best in well-drained soils. All are in 2 or 3 litre pots priced £5.99 each. We have a large number of alpine/rockery plants in production at the moment - we expect most of them to be ready for selling later this month.
In the meantime the Pulsatilla Pinwheels are looking tempting. Pictured in 1 litre pots at £3.29 each. Also known as Pasque Flower, they are an early source of pollen for the bees, keep a dainty size, and do best in full sun and well-drained soil. We think they look especially great planted in gravel gardens. Most of our current stock are white but we might be able to scare up a red or purple for you too. One of our must-haves for spring ... and summer, and autumn. What we're trying to say is that these plants have a really long flowering season.
As featured in our 'Spring to Summer Transition' and 'Having it All' plant packs. Erysimum Bowles Mauve very quickly grows into an evergreen mound of 4ft height and spread. It is butterfly-friendly and flowers for most of the year. Stars n Stripes is another evergreen, a little smaller, with golden variegated leaves. For both of these, snip off old flower stems to keep new ones coming. They are big enough they can be planted singly. Scented Erysimum Pastel Patchwork and Erysimum Apricot Twist grow to around 2ft. When their first flowers finish, chop down the whole plant to about 6" and you will soon be rewarded with fresh growth and blooms. Ideally plant in groups of three or more. All £5.99 in 2 litre pots. Main picture: Stars n Stripes with Bowles Mauve behind (note most of our Bowles Mauve are yet to flower). Gallery pictures, from left: Apricot Twist (with Bowles Mauve plants on right); Pastel Patchwork; Stars n Stripes. We have a good few Iberis sempervirens Golden Candy - in 1.5 litre pots at £4.50 as part of our alpine range.
Low-growing and evergreen they are great for groundcover, fronts of borders, gravel gardens, rockeries and cascading out of raised beds. Their pretty white flowers have a gentle fragrance and last through spring into summer. Butterfly friendly. We're getting lots of requests for edible plants at the moment. It's still too early, and too cold at night, for young salad and vegetable plants - seedlings are growing now in the cosy confines of our greenhouse. A few tomato plants should be large enough to sell to those with greenhouses in a week or two; we don't expect to have cucumbers and courgettes ready until late April. Lists of fruit trees and fruit bushes we have in stock are as files on the Home Delivery page. At this time we are not able to supply anything not on these lists. We have limited numbers of 1.5 litre herbs at £3.99 each, including upright and creeping rosemarys, curry plants, a few thyme and a handful of less common varieties such as garlic chives and basil mint. Herbs in production now are growing in 9cm pots at £1.99 each. A few varieties are starting to root in their pots (the mints, fennel, parsley) but any bought now will need careful looking after until they are more established: Want a low-maintenance, fast-growing perennial that keeps its leaves all year round, and spends more time in flower than not?
Our Europys pectinatus will give you instant impact for just £9.99 for a jumbo pot. A South African plant, we believe, although it will fit in well with Mediterranean themes, as it likes the same sunny, dry conditions (although normal soils are fine too). Expect them to grow to 4ft every which way by next year, if not before. With Katie's Garden Plant Centre closed to the public, we are running a new home delivery service.
Nothing compares to being able to walk around a nursery and see what takes your fancy, but we hope this new Recommended page will be the next best thing. Make a note of what you like the look of and and then fill in a request form on the Order Garden Plants page. |
