Our ring-fenced area of Chelsea Flower Show plants features lots of unusual and off-the-beaten-track perennials, ferns and grasses which we are growing especially for the Talitha Arts Garden’s entry.
Restful white will feature heavily in the planting, to represent light transformation. Sprays of cow parsley Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' will be complemented by the lower-growing Peucedanum rablense. There will be lots of pretty, delicate white blooms thanks to Gillenia trifoliata, Lunaria rediviva (Perennial Honesty), Camassia leichtlinii 'Alba' and creeping dogwood, Cornus canadensis. Dusky pinks will come from nodding Columbines Aquilegia buergeriana and vulgaris 'Heidi', echoed by the unusually scented Nectaroscordum siculum, aka Honey Garlic (it smells like it sounds it's going to!). Geum 'Bell Bank', Lamium orvala and Foxglove Digitalis mertonensis continue the colour theme, with Digitalis ferruginea/parviflora adding spikes of upright blooms. Lathyrus vernus is an unusual member of the sweet pea family. Also known as Spring Pea, it is a clump-forming, low-growing perennial, rather than a climber, although the flowers leave you in no doubt it's of the family! Giving the colour pallet a gentle lift will be Geum 'Bremners Nectarine', Papaver 'Tangerine Gem', Trollius 'Golden Queen' and the black-flowered Iris chrysographes. We have everything crossed for a trouble-free growing season for all, as we work towards the May show date! The Talitha Arts Garden is appearing in the All About Plants category at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, featuring a host of plants grown by us.
The garden has been designed by Joe and Laura Carey as a celebration of the creative arts and its power to transform lives. It will use just two main colours to convey the delicate moment between darkness (trauma) and light (transformation). The trauma will be represented by an area of shade, with sparse planting and dark colours leading to a much sunnier area filled with lighter coloured flowers and 250 handmade white porcelain butterflies, created by Japanese ceramicist Naoko Tagai. These will pour from a large sculpted chrysalis, made by Norfolk-based carver Teucer Wilson. Over 80 per cent of the garden’s area will be filled plants, with hard landscaping kept to a minimum. Planting will include several mature trees, with a carpet of naturalistic and woodland-esque perennials and a number of ferns and ornamental grasses.
