DESIGNER BED:

The Butterfly Friendly Garden
The Butterfly Friendly Garden is the 13th  Designer Bed installation, by  Katie's Garden's Rose Martins.

The Butterfly Friendly Garden has been designed and planted to showcase how we can encourage butterflies and moths into our gardens during their different life stages.

The aim is to build an ecosystem that provides flowers for nectar, food plants for egg laying and caterpillars, and safe places for chrysalis to hide.
Butterflies are most attracted to the colours purple, pink, yellow and white, which can be used together in an aesthetically pleasing way in a nature friendly planting scheme.

The Buddleia (Butterfly bush) is probably the most widely known food plant. Others are lavender, sedum, scabious and verbena bonariensis. These are all a good source of nectar.

The holly, Verbascum and thistles are a food source for the caterpillar, whilst leaving an area of longer grass and wild flowers is beneficial to hidden chrysalis.

A source of drinking water is important, especially during our increasingly hot and dry summers.
Further information on how to encourage these beautiful and elegant insects into our gardens and how to participate in The Big Butterfly Count 2025 can be found on The Butterfly Conservation website
