The perfect halfway-house between sowing seeds and buying mature plants, you get the satisfaction of nuturing young plants whilst saving money.

We've got lots of cottage garden classics to choose from, most of which should flower this summertime, including Hollyhocks, Lupins, Foxgloves, Aquilegias (colombine), Salvias and many others.

These plugs are what we use for growing our own stock, so if you want to match our standards we recommend using quality compost with long-release fertiliser mixed in.

Plant into 9cm square or 1 litre pots (suitably sized secondhand pots are available for free at the nursery) and protect from frosts while they are young.

Once they've rooted - which means you can see roots starting to show in the drainage holes, and you feel resistance when you squeeze the sides of the pot - you can plant them into your borders and look forward to years of floral shows!
